Course Summary
As our Institution transitions to University status we continue to grapple with the challenges of being “Student Centered” and building our customer base. As advisors we strive to make a difference in students’ lives. It seems, however, that many students are unaware of how important the decisions they are making can be on their future, and how we as advisors can help. Consequently, we have sought to identify better ways of reaching out to and serving our students. This has led us to explore the many ways in which institutions across the country have embarked down the road of “Intrusive” or “Intentional” advising.
This presentation provides information from the existing literature on this proactive form of advising. It includes examples of how other institutions have implemented this advising strategy, provides institutional statistics and lessons learned regarding what works, and presents how Utah Valley State College (soon to be Utah Valley University) has translated this information in to our daily operations.
Participants will be able to:
1. Learn about existing efforts and information related to “Intrusive/Intentional and Seamless” advising.
2. Engage in discussions of their own institutions’ best practices.
3. Brainstorm possibilities for UVSC/UVU and their own institutions.
4. Effectively communicate information so as to facilitate student understanding and action.
5. Have a knowledge of personalized, intrusive, seamless advising that informs your practice.
6. Demonstrate effective advising and counseling skills.
7. Encourage and assist students to define and integrate their educational and career goals.
